# HONORING:

# **Deval Patrick**

### Former Massachusetts Governor and current Vistria Group Senior Partner

For more than four decades, former Governor Deval L. Patrick has advanced justice, expanded opportunity and strengthened civic life through distinguished leadership in public service, law, business and education. As the 71st Governor of Massachusetts, he championed policies that expanded access to education, health care, transportation and economic opportunity. Today, he is Senior Partner at The Vistria Group, an impact-focused private investment firm, and a Hauser Leader at Harvard University's Center for Public Leadership, where he previously served as the David R. Gergen Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership and co-director of the Center.

Throughout his career, former Governor Patrick has built bridges across the public, private and nonprofit sectors to advance equity and opportunity. Appointed by President Bill Clinton as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, he led the Civil Rights Division's enforcement of the nation's anti-discrimination laws. He later served as a senior executive at Texaco and The Coca-Cola Company, practiced law at Hill & Barlow and Day, Berry & Howard, and founded Bain Capital Double Impact, helping pioneer investments that deliver both competitive financial returns and measurable social impact.

Widely respected for his principled leadership and unwavering belief in the promise of inclusive democracy, former Governor Patrick has inspired generations of leaders to pursue bold solutions to society's greatest challenges. Through his public service, business leadership, teaching and writing, he continues to advance a vision of justice, shared prosperity and opportunity for all. His legacy is one of courageous leadership, transformative vision and enduring commitment to the common good.

### Nancy Huntington Stager Collaborative Impact Award

![Just a Start Logo-1](https://join.easternbank.com/hubfs/Just%20a%20Start%20Logo-1.png "Just a Start Logo-1")

For more than five decades, Just A Start has expanded opportunity and economic mobility for individuals and families in Cambridge and the Metro North region through comprehensive programs that build homes, careers, and futures.

In 2025, Just A Start further amplified its mission by teaming up with a diverse coalition of partners, including the City of Cambridge, Sanofi, YouthBuild Global, and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, to create the Economic Mobility Hub. The 70,000 square-foot mixed-use development integrates affordable housing, workforce training, and early childhood education under one roof to prepare residents for careers in construction, solar energy, information technology, and biotechnology, while connecting them to the resources they need to thrive.

The Economic Mobility Hub demonstrates the power of cross-sector partnership to address complex community challenges and expand access to opportunity. Further, the partners’ collective achievement embodies the spirit of the Nancy Huntington Stager Collaborative Impact Award and its enduring belief that collaboration can create lasting change.

### About Eastern Bank Foundation

To achieve a just, equitable and inclusive society, we believe individuals, families and communities who have been historically and systematically excluded from America’s prosperity need fundamental resources and opportunities to thrive.

We invest with community-led organizations to promote structural change that builds economic inclusion, mobility and social justice in four strategy areas -- advancing equity in the small business ecosystem, enriching early childhood development, securing safe and affordable housing and promoting workforce development.

Knowing the roots of social and economic injustice are as stubborn as they are old, we employ a variety of levers including Philanthropy, Employee Volunteerism, Advocacy, and Collaboration to lift up and rise with our communities.

Each year, the Celebration of Social Justice honors an outstanding leader who, through their tireless dedication and passion, has made significant contributions to advance social justice in our communities.
